Build-Your-Own Aquaponics System - Large

Exactly what the person who wants to grow their own fish and vegetables needs to get started!

(you save almost $80!)

Two great videos, a Getting Started Kit, and an IBC Tote Aquaponics System Kit with all the plumbing parts you will need to turn three IBC shipping totes into a thriving 250 gallon aquaponics system!

1) IBC Tote Plumbing Kit (value $395)

Based on Murray Hallam's incredible video - DIY Aquaponics - this kit has all the plumbing parts you need to build a 3-bed, 275 gallon aquaponics system out of 3 IBC totes!

This kit includes the following

  • All the fittings and bulkheads you will need, plus some extras for flexibility in routing your pipes*
  • 3 Bell siphons, complete with Media Guards
  • Murray Hallam's 21 page Toteponics guide.
  • Additional detailed drawings that show exactly how every part included in this kit can be used.
*Please note, although many of the parts included in this kit are the same or similar to those noted in the Murray Hallam DIY Totes Kit description, this kit is not intended to exactly match the items in the Murray Hallam Totes Kit description.

The 87 components in this kit would take hours and hours to locate and assemble! We've done all the frustrating work so you don't have to!

  • Found substitutes for parts Murray specified that are not available in the U.S.
  • Sourced specialty plumbing parts you would normally need to purchase in bulk or have a wholesale license to purchase
  • Tracked down the best possible vendors
  • We've built and tested this kit in our own back yard!

And the final result!

What this kit does not include

  • 1" and 2" PVC pipe - this can be easily and inexpensively sourced locally, and purchasing your own gives you more flexibility with the placement of your components. (As a guide, we used two 10’ lengths of 2” PVC as well as five 10’ lengths of 1” PVC in creating our test system.)
  • IBC totes - these can be purchased for $70 - $100 from local sources and can readily be found through e-Bay®, Craig’s list and other online sources, or in the Yellow Pages under “Barrels and Drums – Plastic”.  Or contact the good folks at Colorado Zero Waste.  They ship totes all across the country.
  • Grow Media - Each IBC tote grow bed holds approximately 100 gallons, or 380 liters, of material.  This comes out to 9.5 -40 liter bags of Expanded Shale OR 8 -50 liter bags of Hydroton for each bed and the entire system needs 28.5 -40 liter bags of shale OR 23 -50 liter bags of Hydroton.  Click here to shop for grow media.

2) 800 gph ActiveAqua Pump (value $58.95)

If you set up your system mostly as we did and Murray did, an 800 GPH pump will work well.

3) 3 Bell Siphon Lids (value $23.95)

To keep the grow media and algae out of your siphons, and your grow bed looking neat and tidy.

4) DIY Aquaponics Video (value $42.95)  includes:

  • DIY Aquaponics An hour of Murray showing you step-by-step how to build your own 3 bed aquaponic system using IBC totes
  • A second hour called "Aquaponics:The First Twelve Months" that explains how to look after your aquaponics system from start to harvesting your fish
  • BONUS: The plans for building the IBC system from the DIY section in a downloadable PDF!

5) Getting Started Kit (value $93.70)

Getting Started

  • Aquaponics Explained video with 3.5 hours of instruction, broken out by easy to access chapters. ($29.95)
  • API Freshwater Master Aquarium Test Kit to monitor your pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate levels during system startup and beyond. ($24.95)
  • pH Up and pH Down Solutions for maintaining optimal pH levels for fast cycling and for the health of your plants ($13.90)
  • Digital Thermometer ($9.95)
  • Cycling Kit for establishing nitrifying bacteria and getting your plants off to a great start (for a 100 - 300 gallon tank) ($14.95)
    • Detailed instructions on how the process works and how to fully cycle your system BEFORE adding fish.  This technique, referred to as "fish-less cycling" has become a favorite of aquaponic gardeners worldwide because it completely eliminates the exposure of your fish to dangerous levels of ammonia and nitrites.
    • Powdered, soluble pure ammonia. No more searching for hard to find industrial products!
    • Powdered, soluble seaweed (same as Maxicrop or Seasol) to give your plants a strong start
    • Data Tracking Chart so you can follow your system's progress and spot problems early.
